    The exact origin of the game of Poker are unknown, but there are several theories that have been put forward. Some say that he was born in Persia to 1600, others say in Europe where it was called “poque” or “pochen” and still others suggest that originated in the United States to New Orleans in 1800 before the American civil war-where spread rapidly in various cities throughout the old West.


    Poker was played by two distinct groups of gamblers. The first group consisted of players who have enjoyed the game sparingly. They played mostly for fun and did not depend on their earnings to their livelihood. The second group was composed of professional players – men who relied on their winnings for financial survival. The latter group were looked upon by the general public who saw them as cheaters cheat their victims of their hard earned money.


    The cities of Western frontier tolerated gambling in the early 1800s until 1830, when were approved laws that prohibit gambling. Many of the well-known players were run out of town, some of them were tarred and feathered, and some were lynched by vigilante groups.
