Ok then go to your local pub, go to the bar to order your favourite tipple and take a seat in front of the TV show that is currently in the horse racing live.
Turn around to see who else is there before for 5 minutes with the paper of news,
Looking around you to see four men in the corner of the room with more than 40 pounds on the billiard table as they are playing for £ 10 a man per frame.
In the opposite corner you see four similar-looking men sitting around a green piece of cloth with what seems connect4 coins before them and on the shelf under the table is a glass with the same £ 40 in it.
A walk over to see four men playing cards as the pool is not interested in and you’re not very good at it, and it must be good as they are bets £ 10.
You pull up a seat at the table of paper and watch for about 5-10 minutes before asking to join as “this seems easier than all the luck is not as the swimming pool where you should be able to play”.
Within 5 minutes of sitting already are reaching in his pocket to get out another £ 5 as have already been fleeced out of your first initial Buy-in. “Ah that’s ok, even if that guy just got lucky on me that he had to have good cards to bet that a lot all the time”
But he has done? Or was he using the same type of skill that was needed by the players pool their money to win?
This is the underlying question is not it?
I have been playing casino poker now in the League and home for over 4 years and the amount of people who do not play or understand poker have uttered the immortal words “I beat poker is easy-its all about who has the best cards” is incredible.
In my opinion, these are the same people who write the laws on public/private Member Club restrictions Poker gambling.
pay £ 5 in 24 hours for a player with a maximum of £ 100 for Pub & £ 10 in 24 hours with a maximum of £ 250 pay for private members club, what a joke.
If you were playing pool, bingo, the tote or banned an arm you could bet a salary of full weeks in less than an hour, but if you want to use your Whit your skills and your ability to play poker against other like minded people unless you go to a casinoevery time you open the cards and place over your £ 5 or £ 10 on the table immediately breaking the law.
You always get quoted, but I will repeat for the sake of this article, “How come we always see the same faces at the final table Daniel Negreanu has demonstrated this with his second final table at the WSOPE in 2 years and the same with Ivan Demidov WSOP Finalist 2008reaching the final table of both the WSOP & WSOPE in the space of a few months, Dennis Phillips last years WSOP final table appearance at and a great abyss perform at this years event. These people are not successful so they had to take some lucky cards here and there and win some coin flips, along the way, but are skilled at what they do and keep doing so well through there knowledge and understanding of the game not by sheer luck.
I think the Government really need to look at this and as long as the games are conducted fairly and League nights are performed openly and honestly then poker should be treated as much as a game of skill like any other sport or game. And restrictions should be lifted to allow a greater level of play throughout the poker playing community without breaking the Bank or the law.
How about our MPs watching upping the stakes not fools but amounts at a reasonable price, where players will have more severe and a high standard of play is achieved along the way.
The amount of people who do well at pub leagues but then completely bust out when you go to the Casino is due to the massive Gulf in the standard game.
We need to look to get the Games raised a min on £ 20 for 24 hours with a maximum of £ 500 pays for pubs and £ 35 and a max of £ 750 pay for private members club.
No political party who take this line during the forthcoming elections will definitely be getting my vote.
And I hope that all players within the community of poker UK will join me.
